Alone in the City
In his ongoing documentary series Alone in the City, painter and fine art photographer Marco Alex offers an intimate, cinematic view into the lives of single, unmarried women living alone in major cities around the world, predominantly New York City, where Marco grew up.
Initiated in 2020, the project artistically captures the solitary lives of modern city women. Marco’s lens focuses on the small, private moments of daily life: eating, sleeping, working, showering, bathing, cooking, and so much more—each unfolding alone within the confines of their urban spaces. The subjects of Alone in the City are as diverse as New York City, they range between young women and older women, from the wealthy to those struggling, white women and non-white women alike.
This body of work challenges the narratives often associated with modern womanhood. Marco's beautifully shot fine art series presents a quiet, reflective exploration of modern women and their increasing solitude. Rather than imposing a definitive meaning, Alone in the City invites viewers to interpret each piece through their own lens. Ultimately, Marco asks: Is the experience depicted of these modern women one of solitude or loneliness?

A solitary figure, lost in the quiet contemplation of a delicious Chinese meal, becomes the centerpiece of Marco Alex's "Alone in the City" series. This evocative photograph captures a Brooklyn woman navigating the solitude of a stormy autumn night. The interplay of soft, warm lighting illuminating the takeout container and the cool, rain-washed tenement buildings seen from the window creates a poignant and intimate atmosphere.
This limited edition print, one of 25 available, is meticulously crafted on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta for exceptional archival quality and a luxurious finish. Two artist proofs are also offered, ensuring exclusivity for collectors.

house. The setting—a vast bathroom—belongs to a young college student left alone by her globe-trotting parents. Alex focuses on the emotional truth of her situation: the exaggerated scale of the mansion serves not as comfort, but as a visual symbol of her solitude. It is a home too large to feel welcoming to one person. Her post-shower vulnerability and complex expression—hair wrapped in a towel—convey the quiet power of profound loneliness amidst a world of privilege

In The Layover, Marco Alex captures a charged moment of departure. An airline captain, dressed in uniform and holding his travel bag, is seen leaving a bedroom. Before stepping fully out of the private world, with faintest smile toward a woman lying on the bed. The gesture is small, but it carries the entire story: a goodbye, a memory, perhaps a secret.
Inspired by the narrative atmosphere associated with Jack Vettriano, the photograph invites the viewer into a scene already in motion. We are not told what happened before, nor what will happen next. The captain’s uniform suggests discipline, distance, and public identity, while the bedroom suggests intimacy, vulnerability, and the private life hidden behind appearances. Between these two worlds stands the man himself, caught for a brief second between duty and desire.
The title, The Layover, gives the image its double meaning. On the surface, it refers to the temporary pause in a journey, the short interval between flights. But within the photograph, the layover becomes emotional as much as geographic — a brief encounter, a suspended night, a moment that cannot last. The captain is already leaving, yet his glance back keeps him tethered to the room, to the woman, and to whatever unspoken story remains between them.
This piece stands apart from Marco Alex’s larger photographic series as a singular, self-contained narrative work. Cinematic, elegant, and quietly provocative, The Layover reflects the artist’s interest in storytelling through gesture, atmosphere, and suggestion. Like a still from a film whose plot the viewer must imagine, the photograph lingers in the space between romance and departure.

Marco Alex
In Blues before Sunrise, Marco Alex explores the quiet intersection of cinematic solitude and musical melancholy. Drawing heavily from the atmospheric lighting of Edward Hopper and the staged, noir-like tension of Jack Vettriano, this monochrome work captures a life suspended in the "blue hour" of a breaking dawn.
Named after Leroy Carr’s 1934 blues standard, the photograph finds its soul in a moment of profound transition. A woman stands in the threshold of her bedroom, a liminal space marking the sudden boundary between a shared past and a solitary future. Clasping a mug as if for warmth against the predawn chill, her averted gaze speaks to the immediate, cold aftermath of a departure. Here, the "Blues" are not a color, but a tonality—rendered in the heavy, silver-hued shadows of an apartment that has suddenly grown too quiet.
To preserve the integrity of this atmosphere, each work is rendered on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® Baryta. This museum-grade paper is celebrated for its exceptional depth and rich, velvet blacks, ensuring the emotional resonance of this morning remains as vivid decades from now as it is today.
